Japanese Chicken Wings

I decided to spice things up and tried a new Japanese recipe tonight! I'm in my fourth year of medical school and it feels like vacation! With all this newfound free time, I thought I would broaden my cooking and try other ethnicities! First stop, Japan! Ingredients:  3 lb chicken wings 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 cup all-purpose flour for coating SAUCE:  3 tablespoons soy sauce  3 tablespoon water  1/3 cup white sugar  1/4 cup white vinegar (or rice wine vinegar) 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (or to taste, or freshly minced garlic) 1 teaspoon salt  Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. Lightly add salt and pepper to chicken wings. 3. Dip wings in egg and coat with flour. Bake at 400 degrees F for 25 minutes turning once.  4. In a small bowl combine soy sauce, water, sugar, vinegar, garlic powder and salt. Pour over wings.  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, basting wings with sauce often.

Kiki Soup (Winter Melon Soup)

My boyfriend and I have renamed this soup after our dog, Kiki! It's not what you think - we're not that  Asian where we eat our dogs! We used to give Kiki the pork bones from the soup and eventually stopped because it's not safe to give dogs cooked pork bones due to risk of choking. It's a nice, easy soup with minimal ingredients but does take around 2 hours to make. It takes a while to simmer the broth but it's worth it! Ingredients:  Pork bones  Winter melon  To taste:  Salt & Pepper  Sugar  Fish Sauce  Chicken Granules  MSG Onions & Cilantro (garnish - optional) 1. In a large pot, add water and boil water. Cut pork bones into pieces and wash under cold water. Add to the first pot, you don't have to wait for the water to boil to add the pork bones. In another large pot, fill it 3/4 full with water and bring to a boil.  2. When the first pot boils, drain all the pork bones into a colander and wash under cold water. This c

Chinese Broccoli with Chinese Sausage (Gai Lan voi Lap Suong)

I found this recipe online and tried it out. It's a nice, simple vegetable side dish that can supplement a variety of main courses. Totally yummy and ready in less than 20 minutes! Ingredients: 2 Chinese pork sausage (sliced into 1/4 inches) 1 tablespoon oil 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2-3 slices peeled fresh ginger, finely chopped (optional) 10 stalks Chinese brocoli (gai lan), chopped into 2.5 cm pieces  1 teaspoon sugar  Hot water, as needed Fish sauce to taste 1. Heat pan over medium-heat, add (very little) oil, garlic, ginger, and chinese sausages. Pan fry until chinese sausages are slightly browned and ginger and garlic are aromatic (about 2-3 minutes).  2. Add broccoli and sugar until soft, about 3-4 minutes.  3. Add enough hot water to cover 1/3 of ingredients. Cover pan with lid and simmer for 2 minutes.  3. Season with fish sauce to taste. Serve.
